This substance is highly corrosive to both metals and tissues. Even brief exposure to its fumes or small amounts of the liquid can result in severe and painful burns. The vapors of this chemical are denser than air, with a density of 8.2 lb/gal. It is commonly utilized as a catalyst and raw material in the production of various chemicals. Its effects are immediately noticeable and can persist for minutes to hours. The odor threshold for this compound is 0.4 ppm. It is primarily sourced and used in industries such as aluminum and other metal manufacturing, as well as insecticide production, where it is considered a corrosive liquid.

Hydrogen fluoride, also known as hydrofluoric acid, is an ineffectual acid that serves as a precursor to nearly all fluorine compounds, including pharmaceuticals like [DB00472] (Prozac). It finds application as a chemical reagent in various industrial procedures, such as oil refinery. Additionally, it is utilized as an etchant, cleaning agent, and a reagent for dissolving oxides and silicates.

This chemical is utilized in various industries such as aluminum and chlorofluorocarbon production, as well as in glass etching and chemical manufacturing. However, inhaling gaseous hydrogen fluoride can cause severe respiratory damage, including irritation and lung edema. Skin burns and eye irritation may also occur in humans exposed to this chemical. Long-term exposure to hydrogen fluoride can lead to skeletal fluorosis, a bone disease. Animal studies have shown that both acute and chronic inhalation exposure to hydrogen fluoride can affect the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The carcinogenic potential of this chemical is still uncertain, and the EPA has not classified it as a carcinogen.
